Ghode Jatra celebrated
The traditional festival of Ghode Jatra was celebrated in the capital valley on March 18, 2007.
The festival is celebrated every year on Chaitra Krishna Aunsee, according to the Hindu lunar calendar. The festival takes place in the months of March/April.
The Nepal Army (NA) organized a host of programmes such as parade, equestrian shows, physical exercises and war games at Tundikhel.
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala was invited as the chief guest at the programme. In the past, the king used to chair and grace all NA functions.
During the festival, a grand horse parade takes place at Tundikhel. It is said that in the olden days the Kings of Kathmandu used to worship the Bhadrakali temple in a courtly cavalcade following the Living Goddess Kumari.
Legends reveal that the festival was organised to celebrate the victory over a demon named Tundi who resided over the meadow, which is known as Tundikhel today. Tundi was regarded as terror. So, when he met with his death, people used to get rejoiced by dancing on his body with horses.
Another event associated with Ghode Jatra at Bal Kumari area in Patan is that a horse is intoxicated with spirits and an equally drunken person in a traditional Newari attire rides it. People shout to frighten and enrage the animal until it runs widely with the rider clinging to it. This race is thought to have been commenced in the olden times by a certain king of Patan to give a better show in comparison to Tundikhel's parade, as in those days no one from Patan could attain it. The most worshiped goddess on this day in Bhadrakali also known by the Newari people as Lumarhi Devi. |
